1800's Swedish hand painted desk. We purchased this desk 25 years ago. It has a long story. This desk was found in Sweden in an old barn by a couple from Texas, who traveled through Sweden collecting treasures for a container to ship to their home in Texas with an antique dealer. They purchased it and shipped it home. Between the time that the container left Sweden and arrived in the U. S. the wife died. The husband contacted the antique dealer and asked him to sell the contents of the container. The dealer had a store in Seattle, WA. We admired it for several years before we purchased it. Since then, we have shown the pictures to many museums in Sweden and have had Swedish antique dealers look at the actual desk. It still remains a mystery. All have agreed that it is indeed old, from the 1800's, and they agree that the end paintings look like the work of Johannes Nilsson, famous Swedish artist who lived from 1816 to 1898. As was the custom in old Sweden, artists would travel around the country and in exchange for room and board, they would paint. This might have been the case here, but after it was painted, it was stored in the barn for over 100 years. It was possible that the owners were not pleased with the front panel, as it is not the same quality as the end panels. It is the work of 2 persons. Sometimes a father and son would paint, much like an apprenticeship. We continue to wonder if there is any chance that this could have been painted by Johannes Nilsson and his son. Of course, this is speculative, we have no proof, but museums have pondered this in Sweden as we have shown them photographs of all of the wonderful details of this desk. They do not know how it was able to leave the country, but items were allowed out quite often years ago. This desk is a large desk, at 74 1/2" long, 25 5/8" from front to back. It is 34 1/2" tall at the front , and 32 1/4" at the back (by where the chair would sit) giving a gentle slope for letter writing. There are scribe marks on the inside of the doors, confirming it was done by hand. The doors also lift off of the hinges. It is an amazing desk and when we first got it, found sawdust paper in between the cracks and inside. You can see Swedish words on it and we have saved this with the desk. Please email any questions. $14,800.00 SALE!!!! $12,500.00
